IAWPA Hails Japan-UN 70-Year Partnership at Abuja Commemoration
ABUJA, Nigeria – The International Association of World Peace Advocates has commended Japan for seven decades of cooperation with the United Nations, describing the partnership as a model of consistent support for multilateralism, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.
Speaking at a commemorative event in Abuja on IAWPA International Spokesman P.Amb. Emmanuel Nkweke said Japan’s engagement with the UN since 1956 had produced tangible outcomes in peacekeeping, disaster response, human security, and technical cooperation across Africa and Asia.
“Japan has shown that long-term commitment to the UN system yields results. From peacekeeping contributions to the funding of SDG-aligned projects, Japan’s partnership reflects the values of dialogue, trust, and shared responsibility that the UN was built on,” Nkweke said.
The event brought together diplomats, civil society leaders, and development partners to mark the 70th anniversary of Japan’s UN membership. Participants reviewed Japan’s role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in health, education, infrastructure, and climate resilience.
Nkweke noted that IAWPA, which holds Special Consultative Status with UN ECOSOC, had worked with Japanese partners on peace education and youth empowerment programs in West Africa. He called for deeper collaboration between Japanese institutions and African development agencies to expand community-level peacebuilding.
“At a time when multilateralism faces strain, Japan’s steady support for the UN reminds us that sustained diplomacy and development cooperation remain the most effective tools for preventing conflict and building resilient societies,” he added.
The Japan-UN partnership began in 1956 when Japan joined the United Nations. Over the past seven decades, Japan has served multiple terms on the UN Security Council, contributed to UN peacekeeping missions, and remained one of the largest financial contributors to the UN system.
IAWPA said it would continue to work with Japanese diplomatic missions and civil society groups to promote the SDGs and conflict prevention initiatives ahead of the 2026 UN High Level Political Forum in New York.
