Undersea Cables: The Invisible Infrastructure Powering the Digital World

Image
Every day, billions of people around the world send emails, participate in video conferences, stream content, use search engines, and carry out financial transactions online — often without considering the complex infrastructure that makes these activities possible. Beneath the oceans lies a vast network of submarine cables silently connecting continents and powering the global digital economy. According to Tomas Lamanauskas, Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), undersea cables have become the backbone of global digital connectivity and modern communication systems. “About 99 per cent of international internet traffic travels through submarine cables,” he explained. “Even this conversation is being carried through these cables.” While many people are familiar with visible technologies such as mobile networks, satellites, and broadband internet, few recognize that these systems depend heavily on an extensive underwater cable network often referred...

UN Leads Global Call to Prepare for Digital System Failures

Image
The United Nations has called on governments, institutions, and stakeholders worldwide to urgently prepare for the possibility of large-scale digital system failures that could severely disrupt modern life. While a temporary loss of internet connection may seem like a minor inconvenience, the UN warns that a major collapse of digital infrastructure — affecting satellites, healthcare systems, financial networks, transportation, energy supply, and communications — could trigger devastating global consequences. The warning comes amid growing concerns over what experts describe as a potential “digital pandemic,” where interconnected technological systems fail simultaneously and create widespread disruption across multiple sectors. According to Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the risks are already evident both on Earth and in space. “The common denominator of these unintentional disruptions is their tendency to cascade with impacts...

War Is Becoming a Death Sentence for Women and Girls

Image
Thirteen-year-old Mona still remembers the terrifying moment the second airstrike struck her family’s building in Gaza. “We were sitting on the sixth floor when they hit the seventh floor — my uncle’s apartment,” she recalled. “My uncle’s wife was screaming, ‘My children! My children are gone!’ As I rushed to help her, they fired the second shell. That was when my mother and my siblings were killed.” Mona survived the attack, but her mother, sister, and brother did not. The explosion destroyed their home and left her with life-changing injuries, including the loss of a leg. Her story reflects the harsh reality facing millions of women and girls trapped in conflicts around the world today. As the United Nations marks Protection of Civilians Week, global conflicts have reached their highest levels since 1946. Wars are becoming longer, deadlier, and increasingly fought in densely populated communities instead of distant battlefields. Homes, schools, hospitals, and shelters are being destr...

UN International Day of Living Together in Peace

Image
Message from the International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA) on the UN International Day of Living Together in Peace 16th May 2026 Theme for 2026: “Peace is Action” Fellow Nigerians, Today, 16th May 2026, the world commemorates the UN International Day of Living Together in Peace. On behalf of IAWPA, we salute every Nigerian who chooses dialogue over division, tolerance over hate, and unity over conflict. This day reminds us that peace is not the absence of differences, but the presence of respect, justice, and shared purpose. Nigeria’s greatest asset is our diversity—of language, faith, culture, and history. When we live together in peace, that diversity becomes the engine of national progress. 1. Why This Day Matters for Nigeria In the last decade, communal clashes, youth restiveness, and mistrust between communities have cost lives, destroyed livelihoods, and weakened trust in institutions. Living together in peace requires more than speeches. It requires systems that...

Image
The International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA)has  strongly condemned  the reported abduction of 42 school children in Borno State.   Speaking on behalf of the association, P.Amb. Emmanuel Nkweke stated  “We are outraged and heartbroken. In the 21st century, no child should be taken from a classroom at gunpoint. No parent should live in fear that sending a child to school could mean losing them forever. This act is a direct assault on the right to education, on human dignity, and on the future of Nigeria. Such atrocities cannot be normalized. They are a stain on our collective conscience and a failure of the systems meant to protect the most vulnerable.” The statement stress that this Must Stop.  It also said such incident can be reduced. The IAWPA statement said it believes that abductions, alongside other cases of communal violence, banditry, and youth-related crime reported across Nigeria, are not inevitable. UN Nuclear Non-Proliferation Conference Ends Without Consensus After Four Weeks of Talks

After four weeks of intensive negotiations at United Nations Headquarters in New York, the 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) concluded on Friday without reaching consensus on a final declaration. The outcome marks another setback for global nuclear disarmament efforts, as Member States once again failed to agree on measures aimed at strengthening and modernising the treaty, which has served as the cornerstone of international nuclear non-proliferation for more than five decades. It was not until 9 p.m. on Friday that Ambassador Do Hung Viet, President of the conference, and UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu addressed journalists following the final round of negotiations. Visibly exhausted after days of intense diplomatic efforts — including surviving on little more than a croissant for lunch earlier in the day — Ambassador Viet reflected on the difficult process of trying to secure agreement on the fourth draft of ...
